Competitive Intelligence :: Do you know what Motorola is doing?

By Nathalie | May 13, 2008

Here comes the second one about competitive intelligence after Competitive Intelligence: Do you know what NDS is doing ?
This presentation from Joe Goldberg Senior Director, Corporate Business Intelligence Corporate Strategy Office at Motorola gives a definition of intelligence at Motorola followed by a description of its evolution and current state in the company.

Page 8 shows a great graph about all the different intelligence sources (primary and secondary), followed on page 9 by a slide entitled “The key differentiating factor is the quality of the individual intelligence professional” which shows the skills required to make a difference according to Joe Goldberg.

I found interesting the following sentences on competitive intelligence in the presentation:

  • “Next to knowing all about your own business, the best thing to know about is the other fellow’s business.” John D. Rockefeller
  • “The mean time between decisions is greater than the mean time between surprises”

How can competitive intelligence bring data to reduce the mean time between decisions as well as to reduce the number of surprises?
